Ibland går tretton på ett dussin - här är ett tydligt fall. Den vi söker här finns nämligen inte med på några officiella listor över de som burit den världsberömda yrkestiteln (nio bokstäver), trots att det inte råder någon tvekan att det stämmer in. Inte heller är "titelhållarens" levnadsöde särskilt välkänt, där historien är nästan lika hemsk som gripande. När svenskarna var upptagna med sitt traditionsenliga lussefirande - såklart - blev "nummer 13" lämnad åt elementen och dömd att tillbringa sin tid i ensamhet; månad efter månad, år efter år. Sometimes there are thirteen to a dozen - here is a clear case. Who has missed the red-and-white logotype, since we have all been conditioned since childhood? Inför valet 2013 kommer förmodligen alla partier att ta upp såväl skola och omsorg som arbetslöshet och globala miljöproblem. En klassfråga är dock redan avklarad (nio dagar före lintottens namnsdag) och påverkar mer än 6,2 miljoner svenskar, men frågan är hur många som har hunnit inse att de "fått det bättre". Många använder fortfarande den "sämre varianten" dagligdags; avsevärt färre utnyttjar förbättringen. “We, the people of …” börjar landets konstitution och fortsätter sedan med att spalta upp lagar och förordningar. Landets frimärken hedrar några av världens ledare, däribland Churchill, i olika valörer av landets valuta. Andra namn som spelat stor roll i landets historia är Ford, Buchanan och Lady Bird. Landets president valdes enhälligt i valet 196_, där skillnaden att ha och inte ha rösträtt sägs ha utdelats av den valda presidenten själv! Vidare beskrivs presidenten till utseendet som en blandning av sin äldre bror och jultomten(!), båda sannolikt mycket mer kända för de allra flesta. För att besvara frågan skickade vi ut en spejare, Majken, till en icke namngiven skola i Uppsala. Det visade sig dock att hon missuppfattade uppgiften och istället bedömde treornas skrivbegåvning! Eller tänkte hon trots allt på originaluppgiften? Anteckna det totala antalet länder som gömmer sig i texten som innehåller fler konsonanter än vokaler.

To answer this question we sent out a scout, Majken, to a non-identifiable school in Uppsala. It turned out though that she misinterpreted the task at hand and instead evaluated the writing abilities of the third-graders! Or did she think about the original assignment after all? Vi kan bara anta att alla har hört talas den fräkniga lintotten vi söker här. Han har med sin gyllenblonda kalufs (se frisyren) och namn i genitiv definitivt blivit en vital del av den svenska kulturen. Under åren har lintotten dykt upp i många olika former, men har hela tiden behållit sin namnsdag sent i januari. Vad heter lintotten? Skriv ner den första bokstaven av namnet som står i genitiv.

We can only assume that everyone has heard of the freckled towhead we are looking for here. He has, with his golden-blonde coiffure (see hairdo) and name in possessive case definitely become a vital part of Swedish culture. Att som i fråga 12 tolka litteratur sägs vara en konst, men ändå undersöks Shakespeare om och om och om igen. En av de mest svårlästa tolkningarna bör dock vara Notes Towards the Complete Works of Shakespeare som skrevs av Elmo, Gum, Heather, Holly, Mistletoe och Rowan - sex celebesmakaker i Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, uppkallade efter bland annat järnek, mistel och rönn. Syftet med deras publikation var, enligt deras skötare, att få till stånd ett svar på en ofta omtalad del av kaosteorin: om man har ett oändligt antal apor framför varsin skrivmaskin, skulle de då kunna skriva ett verk som är oskiljbart från ett skrivet av Shakespeare? Svaret lät naturligtvis inte vänta på sig, även om makakerna förmodligen är lyckligt omedvetna om uppståndelsen. Inom internetkulturen får Andrej Kolmogorovs sats om oändligt antal apor anses som välspridd, men även en aktad författare som nobelpristagaren J.M. Coetzee anspelar på denna i sin roman Elizabeth Costello, vilket även nämndes i frågan. Resultatet då? Jo, efter en viss tvekan i form av ett ff producerades fem sidor text, främst bestående av bokstaven s! De citat - jjjajaajjsss, lnknnbmm och blbbbbnn - som togs från texten, som f.ö. finns tillgänglig på engelska, tyska, franska och spanska, är bland de mer begripliga. Rätt svar: Elmo (22 poäng)

To interpret literature is said to be an art of its own as solvers were asked to do in question 12, yet Shakespeare endures a seemingly never-ending supply of re-interpretations. One of the most hard-to-read critiques ought to be Notes Towards the Complete Works of Shakespeare written by Elmo, Gum, Heather, Holly, Mistletoe, and Rowan - six Celebes crested macaques (Macaca nigra) in Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Devon, UK. The reason with their publication was, their handler said, to reach an answer in a much debated issue with chaos theory: if one has an infinite number of monkeys each in front of a typewriter, could they then write a piece inseparable from one written by Shakespeare? The answer came quickly, although the macaques are happily unaware of the stir they caused. Within the internet culture, the infinite monkey theorem is well-known, but even a highly regarded author as Nobel prize laureate J.M. Coetzee uses his own version of this in his novel Elizabeth Costello, which was also mentioned in the question. So what about the actual result? Well, after some hesitation expressed with an ff a total of five pages were produced, primarily consisting of the letter s! The quotes - jjjajaajjsss, lnknnbmm och blbbbbnn - taken from the text, which incidentally is available in English, German, French, and Spanish, are all excerpts of the less repetitive part. Som vanligt bjöd årets tändsticksfråga på en ovanlig lösning, sin enkelhet till trots. Det gällde att låta två trianglar bli fyra genom att flytta så få tändstickor som möjligt. Eftersom en nollösning är utesluten i detta fall, insåg många att svaret skulle vara minst en tändsticka - vilket också var svaret. En möjlig lösning ser ni nedan, medan ett alternativ skulle vara att skriva fyran med romerska siffror, IV. Rätt svar: 1 (10 poäng)

A perfect match?


As usual, this year's matchstick problem offered an unusual solution, in spite of being fairly straightforward. The object was to take two triangles and make four by moving as few matches as possible. Since a null solution was out of the question, many realized that one needs to move at least one matchstick - which also turned out to be the correct solution. One possible solution is shown above, but it is also possible to write the four using Roman numerals, IV. Correct answer: 1 (10 points)
