Will I have to pay tax?
We are faced with the news that the Queen of Mean Leona Helmsley has she is asking for Trouble (her pet Maltese, that is) to spend 12 million US dollars following the will of the late hotel billionaire. On what one might ask: bones? a diamond leash? stocks in Confuse-A-Cat Ltd? Anyway, we know that the total value of prizes in Klurendrejeriet® 2008 will not be anywhere near 12 million US dollars, but we can at least end the non-dog status if Klurendrejeriet® mini here and now (clue given above).

Translation of comment (part 10)

There are many words in Swedish that are spelled the same way, but mean completely different things based solely on the fact that they are pronounced differently (as if they had a grave/acute accent), a so-called pitch accent. An excellent example is the pair anden (the duck) and anden (the ghost), and another is planet (planet) and planet (the airplane). The latter one can be distinguished using grammar rules, whereas the former is harder to see though context should make it obivous. To complicate matters, there are a few words that make use of the accents, for instance ide (lair) and idé (idea), but it would be wrong to write out accents for words that should not have any (except in the strict way of showing pronunciation).
En en or two ...?
Even one of the words for one, en, has a pitch accent friend in the word en (jupiper tree). And to make it even more odd, this word is an n-genus word, which makes a juniper tree be an excellent way of practicing both of the Swedish 101 rules featured on Klurbloggen so far: en en!

Flashback! (part 6)
Is it a three-in-one deal?
With the current World Championship in mind, it is appropriate to remember this question from Klurendrejeriet® 2006:
4. PACKAGE DEAL
The three boxes in our picture is really a Christmas gift that should be ”added up” and tied with a black string, making it easy to find. Write down the first letter in the name of the present.
Hint: If you don’t know the answer, maybe Polly Sewage or Carolina in Växjö can help you.

Hur hittar jag ...? (How do I find ...?)
How? That is the question!
A few readers of Klurbloggen has asked on other forums where and how one finds the answers to the current questions (in Klurendrejeriet® mini). As natural as this request is, but therein lies the idea of the contest itself: you are supposed to find the answers yourself! We can, however, offer you the links to the contest as we have done in the past: Klurendrejeriet® mini

800!
Svaren skall skickas in till Ultunesaren före 13 oktober, 2007.
DJ 1: "... question on everybody's lips..."
DJ 2: "On their chapped lips."
It may be the toll-free area code in the USA and a few other countries, but on Klurbloggen it is currently the number of unique visitors. Many have proceeded to download the contest Klurendrejeriet® mini, where three riddled questions wait to be solved. Answers should sent to Ultunesaren before October 13, 2007, just like the other contests the student magazine hosts (bilingual and open to everyone).

Brukar jag verkligen slå volter?
I am Sven and I am Swedish!
Since the number of visitors have increased drastically the past couple of days, we welcome all new readers of Klurbloggen with an entirely new clue. This time, the hint is given for the last question in Klurendrejeriet® mini entitled: 3. HAND IN HAND, LINE BY LINE

One of the faces of the Clock Tower,
housing the toll-free Big Ben.
Are you still frustrated that you have not been able to solve any of the questions in Klurendrejeriet® mini yet? There is still plenty of time, but here are a few hints on how to proceed and thus manage the anger:
i) read the question carefully and check to see if there are any bells ringing [it will not be Big Ben, however, since it is currently being restored - see above],
ii) write down all thoughts you can tie to the title, text, pictures and the clues given,
iii) check Klurbloggen for extra clues [recaps are offered regularly on the first of every month, so far May/June and July]
iv) go to the homepage of Ultunesaren and see what has been used before in previous versions of the contest or try to solve any of the Flashback! posts [complete solutions are available on the homepage, whereas the Flashback! posts have none to try to recapture the mood of X-Mases past], and
v) ask your bounce people if they have reached any conclusions and try to reason your way to a solution (because you are not doing this by yourself, are you?)!
vi) do not overdo it - the really nice prizes will be offered in Klurendrejeriet® 2008 (and the winners in this version will receive only minor ones)

Vad är detta? (What is this?)
That's the name of the game!
Klurendrejeriet® is a contest where the object is to answer questions formulated in a cryptic way. The questions are often posed as riddles, but is usually supplemented with pictures or further explaining text. In a collective set of Klurendrejeriet® there are is a main theme that binds many of the contest's questions together (except for Klurendrejeriet® mini which runs right now). The contest has existed since 2005 (and has been offered as an English translation since 2006), and has been published in cooperation with the magazine of the Ultuna Student Union, Ultunesaren. Klurendrejeriet® 2007 was awarded Best Illustration among the student magazines in Uppsala, Sweden.

Mindre än ett år (Less than a year)
Is it party time yet?
Just to show that we are working with really fresh questions, we can reveal that the material for the last question in Klurendrejeriet® mini (3. HAND IN HAND, LINE BY LINE) is less than one year old.

Enkätlöst! (No survey!)
Blogger has still not worked out all the quirks with the survey add-on, which means that we will wait a bit longer before using it again. If you want to cast your vote on the current election, you can do so here and here for your next Swedish lesson.

Automatiserade meddelanden! (Bot ads!)

Klurbloggen was recently attacked by automatically generated messages from at least one so-called bot (probably not Anna, see above). These messages were not accepted by us and were therefore removed. If you know that you have written a message that cannot be seen, please resend it to the blog.

As previously reported, the sponsors for Klurendrejeriet® 2008 are steadily getting there. Some contracts have already been written, some are still negotiated and a few are still works in progress. We hope to have more information to relay shortly.

You have voted, right? If that is not the case, you can still do so here. Also, being a non-native Swedish speaker, you can also suggest something that you wish to have explained in terms of grammar, culture or general knowledge. For that input, you can leave your comment here.

Flashback-nyhet 3! (Flashback news 3!)
The title character from question 8 in Klurendrejeriet® 2006, Mattias' favourite things, has recently been on the move again, so he is missing out on the break he was looking forward to. If you have not solved the question yet, give it a try and we will supply the link to the news about Mattias in about a week.

Arbetsvanor (Work habits)
A closer look at the visiting times for Klurbloggen's Central European visitors, give similar results as what was recently noted in Swedish media (link in Swedish only), which lists the findings of an American study stating that two hours of "working" is in reality "not working". Let's hope that they are correct, right?

Ny ledtråd? (New clue?)
Ultunesaren - the home of Klurendrejeriet®
Klurbloggen has still not heard from Blogger if the automated survey module has been fixed, and until then we will keep any voting procedure in the simple classic fashion. This week's survey question will be equally simple (voting ends on Friday 17 August, CET): How many questions have you solved so far in Klurendrejeriet® mini?
a) Not a single one! Is it possible to get help for all of them?
b) I have solved one, but I still need more information!
c) I have taken two, but can I get a clue anyway?
d) Help? Well, I guess I could always double-check my solutions ...

Klurendrejeriet for dummies (part 5)
Follow my advice and you will succeed!
Here is the English translation of the suggestions given in Klurendrejeriet® mini last year, titled:
Klurendrejeriet for dummies
"5. TAKE IT EASY! There is little to be gained by rushing - unless one is after the time-limited final seat - so do not forget to relax while you solve. Before you know it, the answer pops up on tv, in a magazine or spontaneously by itself in your head. Make sure to write down this impulse before it goes away! People solving riddles in Klurendrejeriet® are always on their toes, even in their when not solving actively. Sleep is just a relaxed state with closed eyes."
Note: There is no time-limited final seat in Klurendrejeriet® mini, but your answers need to be sent in by 13 October. This was the last part of Klurendrejeriet för dummies to be translated. You can find the Swedish original on the bottom on the blog and the four first parts by clicking on the label dummies just below this text.

In the Words of the Master (Mästarens ord)
Here is another non-Swedish clue to one of the questions in Klurendrejeriet® mini, in an attempt to reduce the ethnocentric bias of the contest (in spite of the fact that it always will remain Swedish in character)! The clue is given in the style of a "prophecy" from the Seer of Seers (or Prognosticator of Prognosticators):

(What you believe...)
Will size matter in 2008?
The blog reader survey guessing the theme for Klurendrejeriet® 2008 has now closed. The ten votes cast were distributed in the following manner:
Radio & tv: no votes
Travel & adventure: 3 votes
Games & betting: 1 vote
Large & small: 5 votes
Something else: 1 vote
Among the voters in the Swedish part, Travel & adventure was the most popular one (two of four votes), while the English-speaking voters preferred Large & small (four of six votes). Since the theme has been set for a few months already, neither this survey nor anything else affects the upcoming questions. If you voted and would like to know the answer, you should watch this space at Klurbloggen in the end of November.

One equals the other?
The Swedish language may have many quirks and traps one can fall into, but no other is as clear as the number one. There are two separate words for one in Swedish, en and ett corresponding to the two main grammatical genders the language has. The former one is called n-genus (also reale or utrum) as it uses the suffix -n, whereas the latter one is called t-genus (also neutrum) with suffixes -t. When learning Swedish, one normally learns the genus of the word at the same time. There are a few very fuzzy rules though these are really not worth remembering. To complicate matters slightly, the plural form of t-genus words is oftentimes -n (if it is not a null plural), but that is different lesson entirely!
Let us put this new Swedish knowledge to the test! In a Swedish rebus, such as the one in question 1. EXPRESSIONS FOR IMPRESSIONS in Klurendrejeriet® mini, it is impossible even for a native Swedish speaker to know beforehand if it should be read en or ett. Once reached, however, the correct answer only yields one solution and the other turns into gobbledygook. Hopefully this can shed some light on the problem non-Swedish participants might have with Swedish.
