Early bird?
Even though some households in the central parts of Uppsala already have received their copy of UppsalaTidningen, the contest does not officially start until tomorrow, December 1. Those of you who have already seen the six first questions in Klurendrejeriet® should thus be extra happy. See you tomorrow!

Årets tema! (This year's theme!)
Finally!
A few hours ago the kick-off for Klurendrejeriet® 2008 took place, where the theme was finally revealed: Travel and adventure! For this we open our own travel agent - Klurendrejeriet Travel Agency - with the motto "Your trip * an adventure * our goal". The prizes in the final is loyal to the theme and offers one prize in each geographical cardinal direction plus an extra one for people that want to go their own way. More information will follow ...

Alternativ Alborgen (Alternative Alborgen)
For all of you who pass Gävle may, if you are one of the lucky ones, pick up a copy of Ultunesaren at Alborgen in Valbo. You will have to wait for a while, since the magazine will not be issued until the middle of December. Att vänta ... (To wait ...)
To wait is part of celebrating a Swedish jul! First one is waiting for December to come, then the actual X-Mas itself (luckily on the 24th!), and on X-Mas Eve everybody (at least in the older generations) is waiting for Donald Duck and his friends to wish us Merry Christmas. To make the waiting period as short as possible this year, Klurendrejeriet® will start already on December 1 rather than December 12. There is, however, nothing that indicates that this will make it any easier because of this ...

Right now the last preparations for Klurendrejeriet® 2008 are underway. But before the riddles come out in the open, other questions still wait to be answered. What is the theme this year? How many riddles will there be? And what prizes will be offered? We dare say that there will be something special! If you need to refresh your memory of how a question may look, you can find all previous versions of the contest on the homepage of Ultunesaren (click on Tävling). Klurendrejeriet® 2005 and the first mini contest is not translated into English.

The official start of Sweden.
Sweden is often referred to as being a small country, when in fact it is the 55th largest country area-wise. The country streches from Smygehuk in the south (55°20'13" N, 13°21'34" E) to Treriksröset in the north (69°03'36" N, 20°32'55" E), as well as the islets Stora Drammen in the west (58°55'43" N, 10°57'27" E) and Kataja in the east (65°42'0" N, 24°10'0" E). When it comes to population, Sweden drops to 88th place with its 9.1 million inhabitants but that is still in the top half. The combination between the two, however, causes Sweden to end up with of a mere 20 persons per square kilometer. Then again, Sweden's two land-linked neighbours, Finland and Norway, both have an even lower population density at 15.5 and 12 person per square kilometer, respectively. No wonder there is still true wilderness in the northern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula!

Kunglig flytt (A royal move)
I once bit your sister. No realli!
On Saturday an unusual royal visit will take place in Scotland, arriving from Bjurholm in Ångermanland, northern Sweden: the elks Hulda and Herkules will move near Inverness. The happy(?) couple will spend their life on the British Isles where first and foremoost Scottish children will be able to watch the majestik animal in a specially designed park. If the elks are allowed to conquer the forests of Scotland, it will be the first time a foreign head-of-state would rule over part of the British mainland since William the Conquerer achieved the same feat in 1066.

Kallt och rått (Nice, mice and ice)
On the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere, the cold season is coming or possibly already here. How about celebrating this with the most expensive dessert in the world, The Frrrozen Haute Chocolate, containing both 28 cocoas and edible gold-leaf? On top of this, though technically it is on the base of the goblet, you receive a diamond-covered 18 karat golden bracelet. If money is no object, head for Serendipity 3 in New York with your $25,000, though it may be worth waiting with your booking. In these Ratatouille-inspired times, the restaurant has been forced to (temporarily) shut down after the second health inspection in a row found critters of various kinds. Perhaps the high price can be justified after all, if it turns out that the luscious treat was prepared by specially trained rodents. The rest of us will surely settle for the standard $7.50 original.

Flashback-nyhet 7! (Flashback news 7!)
The real deal, right?
Once in a while, things go from priceless to worthless, but how often does someone cause the reduction themselves? Moderna Museet (The Museum of Modern Art) in Stockholm decided to investigate the authenticity of the 105 so-called Brillo Boxes. They were said to have been displayed in a famous exhibition in 1968, thereby being valued to over 10 million euro. The investigation showed that the boxes were manufactures in 1990, three years(!) after the artist's death, reducing the value close to zero. The famous artist behind the boxes also created the American cultural icon that was part of question 9. THE RED-AND-WHITE LOGOTYPE in Klurendrejeriet® 2007.

Wheel you see me?
Swedish national television released the news today that an unknown almost intact 17th Century ship has been found during the filming of the tv series Vrakletarna (Wreck Searchers) which starts airing today, and later available online at SVT Play. The ship, likely built by Dutch shipbuilders, is standing tall on the floor of the Baltic Sea. A number of factors make the Baltic Sea an excellent site of natural preservation, including the low salinity, the cold water, and the absence of shipworm. Why the ship ended its days right here is still unknown, but not even the laughingly slim chance of a historic insurance fraud is excluded. Whether this will be wrecktified in the future, we do not know.

Den gyllene medelvägen (What was the Middle-thing?)
Measure for Measure of a man?
Wew have previously reported that a group of thespians have requested that more research should be carried out to find out who really wrote the works usually attributed to William Shakespeare. Now, a large group of scientists claim that they have gathered strong evidence that prove that at least some parts were written and edited by a certain Thomas Middleton. Middleton was very famous during his lifetime, but was forgotten in the mists of history. The proof is said to be references to events that took place after Shakespeare's death in 1606. However, just like our last report, we are absolutely sure that none of the questions in the upcoming Klurendrejeriet® 2008 were written by the Bard of Avon. And not Thomas Middleton either for that matter.

Bob tar tub till hjälp (Bob in the Tube)
Allen, Robert, Bob e.dyl.
In the update-hyped world of today, it is not only the original Star Wars-movies that get their share of digitalization, also living legend Bob Dylan adds to the fun. Material to a forthcoming video to one of his greatest songs, Like a Rolling Stone, is being collected on the video clip site YouTube. Only future can tell if this move leads to increased sales and a greater understanding of the singer/songwriter's text, but we wish Bob all the best.

Flashback-nyhet 6! (Flashback news 6!)
Where eagles dare?
The Japanese satellite SELENE, nicknamed Kaguya in Japan after a princess in the possibly oldest Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter [Taketori Monogatari], has taken high-definition pictures of the landscape seen behind the men in the picture from one of the questions in Klurendrejeriet® 2007 (E. COLUMBIA PICTURES PRESENT ...). The video feed is primarily for public relations, but together with the other information gathered during the mission it will be useful for future visits in the neighbourhood.

Y 3K? Because it's fun!
Yesterday, Klurbloggen let the 3000th visitor in through the non-existent turnstyle at its front door. Among the new countries since the latest millenium we find Estonia and Cambodia. Furthermore, Klurbloggen has the greatest number of visitors on Wednesdays. Could it be the mid-week withdrawal from the weekend puzzle perhaps?

Swedish 101 (part 7)

Half a crown for the chest?
The Swedish currency has been the same since 1873 when krona (pl. kronor) replaced the previous riksdaler. The change to krona [crown] was part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union, where also Denmark (and thus also Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands) and later Norway took part. The union lasted until World War I, but even after a formal split, all of the countries retained the name of the currency. The correct name for the Norwegian and Danish kind, however, is krone (pl. kroner) and in Iceland it is called króna (pl. krónur). A common abbreviation in all countries is kr. and the Nordic crowns are all split into 100 öre (øre and aurar, respectively). The singular form for aurar is eyrir. Since neither Denmark nor Sweden opted to join the euro project and Norway and Iceland are not even part of the European Union, the different crowns will remain the first and foremost legal tender in the Nordic countries for quite some time.

Vad är det här igen? (What was this again?)
That's the name of the game!
Klurendrejeriet® is a contest where the object is to answer questions formulated in a cryptic way. The questions are often posed as riddles, but is usually supplemented with pictures or further explaining text. In a collective set of Klurendrejeriet® there are is a main theme that binds many of the contest's questions together (except for Klurendrejeriet® mini). The contest has existed since 2005 (and has been offered as an English translation since 2006), and has been published in cooperation with the magazine of the Ultuna Student Union, Ultunesaren. Klurendrejeriet® 2007 was awarded the prize for Best Illustration among the student magazines in Uppsala, Sweden. Klurendrejeriet® 2008 starts 1 December, 2007.

Flashback! (part 8)
Rumour has it that the person we were looking for in Klurendrejeriet® 2006 once again may be roaming the country. Whether or not this is true, you can find out for yourself by visiting any of the events on this page. For those of you who missed the question, here it is again:
13. JAILHOUSE ROCK
He is sitting in the middle of the floor, our singing jailbird. Instead of text we have hidden almost a dozen clues in the picture (almanac, mulled wine, mitten, clock, etc.), which should lead you on the right track. What is the first name of the jailbird?

Lost and found: Pippi Longstocking
and Magilla Gorilla ...?
We have previously stated here on Klurbloggen that Pippi Longstocking is one of the most famous Swedes. The fact that she is made up does not matter, right? Today, Swedish Posten has officially announced that they will issue a picture of her as this year's holiday season stamp (on roll), which ought to make Pippi even more internationally recoginzed (if at all possible). On the block of four that is issued simultaneously wintery pictures from Lotta on Troublemaker Street and Meg of June Hill can be seen, and at the same time the 100th anniversary of the birth of Astrid Lindgren is celebrated by Posten with a commemorative stamp co-issued with the German counterpart Deutsche Post. Will these be used to pay the postage fee for the German submissions in Klurendrejeriet® 2008?

Kofångare? (Cow-incidence?)
Geronimoo?
Ananova reports the unlikely story of a cow falling 65 meters, landing on a minivan belong to the couple Everson. The cow, weighing in at roughly 600 pounds, had been reported missing but was not found until it landed on the hood. The couple were lucky, unlike the poor cow, and survived by a few feet.

Sponsorer igen (Sponsors again)
Ett stort steg gällande sponsringen för Klurendrejeriet® 2008 togs idag, men än återstår vissa detaljer. Allt bör dock vara klart i god tid före tävlingens kick-off 28 november.
One of the sponsors of Klurendrejeriet® 2008 offered a helping hand today, though some details still need to be worked out. Everything ought to be ready well before the official kick-off on November 28.

[shuurkort] or [keurshurt]?
We have previously dealt with the Swedish letters å, ä, and ö - here is a bit of insight on the rest of the vowels (and for the Swedish ones too for that matter) forming the 17 phonemes found in the language. Orthographically, the Swedish vowels are divided into two groups: hårda (hard ones: a, o, u, and å) and mjuka (soft ones: e, i, y, ä, and ö). The reason for these designations is simple: most of the time the hard ones make the preceding consonant sound be harsher, whereas the soft ones offer a softer sound! The consonant or consonant pairs affected by this are mainly c, k, g, and sk. Examples of hard consonants are cola [k-], kappa [k-], garn [g-], and skalle [sk-], whereas their softer counterparts would be found in citron [s-], käpp [ch-], gärna [y-], and sked [sh-]. A word of caution is in place, as some borrowed words have retained their pronunciation, such as kör [choir, k-] which should not be spoken with kör [(she/he) drives, sh-]. There are also exceptions to the general rule, but those are better learned than explained here. Now you should be able to answer the caption above!

Fara o färde? (Sleeping beauty)
Sant?
True?
In Egypt, the mummy of Tutankhamun has been moved from the tomb in Luxor to a glass case with a climate-controlled environment for the tremendously fragile remains of the old ruler. Well old, he was only seventeen when he died of still somewhat unknown causes, but on the other hand he died 3300 years ago. The relocation to the glass box also allows the general public to view the face of the pharaoh for the first time, which together with the conservation problems probably contributed to the change of address.

Torngivande upptrappning (Stairway to heaven)
Part of the staircase Gustave Eiffel walked up to hoist le tricolore in the top of the Eiffel Tower March 31, 1889 will be sold at an auction hosted by Drouot in Paris. This sale is legitimate unlike the double scam famous con artist Victor Lustig pulled off in 1925 when he sold the entire tower - twice! The second time, however, the police caught on the escalating ruse and Lustig left for USA. As for ruses here on Klurbloggen, you will have to wait a few more weeks ...

Minns du ...? (Do you remember ...?)
The theme has been set (for long)!
During the end of July, we investigated if the readers of Klurbloggen could guess the theme for Klurendrejeriet® 2008. We will not reveal the topic just yet, but we can let you know that indeed was not Radio & tv or Something else though it is one of the remaining ... The theme will be revealed at the official kick-off held at Ultuna Student Union November 28, 2007! We will return with more detailed information next week.
